The most important thing you can do to help lower your cholesterol without medicine is eat a heart-healthy diet, especially avoiding saturated fat.

Some parts of your diet that can help lower your cholesterol are:

  • Avoiding saturated fat – comes from red meat, full-fat dairy, cheese, butter, coconut oil, and baked goods like cakes and pastries
  • Avoiding trans fat – mostly found in highly processed foods like chips, fried food, and fast food
  • Eating fish 2-3 times a week
  • Eating more fiber
  • Grilling, boiling, or steaming food and avoiding frying food

Exercising regularly and being a healthy weight can also help lower your cholesterol. But they aren’t as important as your diet.

Talk to your doctor about ways that you can try to manage your cholesterol.
