There are a couple of foods that can raise your blood pressure:

  • Foods with a lot of salt
  • Foods with a lot of sugar
  • Alcohol

Salt, sugar, and alcohol can all increase your blood pressure in the long term.

Caffeine can also increase your blood pressure, but only for a little bit. Your blood pressure goes back down a few hours later.

Salt – Experts recommend that people with high blood pressure eat less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. That’s a little more than half a teaspoon.

Sugar – The American Heart Association recommends that men eat less than 35 grams of sugar (about 9 teaspoons) and women eat less than 25 grams of sugar (about 6 teaspoons) per day. For reference, one can of Coca Cola has 39 grams of sugar in it.

Alcohol – It’s best for your health not to drink any alcohol. If you are going to drink, experts recommend you drink in moderation. That means drinking no more than one drink each day for women and no more than two drinks each day for men.

Having too much salt, sugar, and alcohol is unwise – they can make your blood pressure rise!
