Caffeine can raise your blood pressure right after you drink it. Doctors aren’t sure if caffeine affects your blood pressure in the long term.

On average, the top blood pressure number (systolic blood pressure) goes up by 8 mmHg for a few hours after you drink a cup or two of coffee. Your blood pressure can stay higher for a few hours, but then it goes back to normal.

Doctors aren’t sure if caffeine affects your chances of getting high blood pressure long-term. Caffeine can affect your health in other ways though, like giving you headaches, making it hard to sleep, making your heart race, or giving you muscle tremors. Experts recommend that people try to limit the amount of caffeine they have to 400 milligrams (mg) each day. That’s about 4 cups of coffee.

Caffeine can make your blood pressure climb, but it goes back to normal in a little time!
