Yes, you may want to avoid some medicines while taking amlodipine. Talk to your doctor about all the medicines you take. Some may not mix well with amlodipine. If you cannot stop taking these drugs, you may not be able to take amlodipine. In some cases, your doctor may lower your dose of amlodipine. Sometimes, they may switch you to another blood pressure medicine.

Here are some drugs that don’t mix well with amlodipine. This is not a complete list.

  • Simvastatin is a drug that lowers your cholesterol. Taking it with amlodipine raises the level of simvastatin in your blood. Taking simvastatin and amlodipine together may also raise the risk of kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes. There are other statin drugs you can take instead.
  • Clarithromycin is an antibiotic. Taking amlodipine with clarithromycin may lower your blood pressure too much. It may also cause kidney damage. There are other antibiotics you can take instead.
  • Cyclosporine is given to patients after an organ transplant so the organ isn’t rejected. The level of cyclosporine in the body may get too high when it is taken with amlodipine.
  • Indinavir, ritonavir, paritaprevir, and telaprevir treat HIV and hepatitis C virus infections. If you take them with amlodipine, the usual dosage of the drugs may need to be changed.
  • Clopidogrel is a drug that stops clots from forming. It is used after a stent is put in a blood vessel. Amlodipine makes the clopidogrel less effective.
  • Sildenafil (Viagra) is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). When it is taken with amlodipine, blood pressure may drop too much.

Keep yourself safe, tell your doctor what you take!
